Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
The prostate is a small gland of the male reproductive system, approximately the size and shape of a chestnut, involved in the production of seminal fluid. Over time, especially after the age of 50, the prostate gland enlarges, leading to a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH should not be confused with prostate cancer, as it is a benign condition; however, it causes significant problems in the daily lives of many men.
As the prostate enlarges, it obstructs the normal flow of urine from the bladder to the urethra, resulting in lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS).
Symptoms include:
- Frequent urination
- Nocturia (nighttime urination)
- Urgency
- Difficulty during the beginning of urination
- Reduced urine flow
- Interrupted urination
- Urinary retention
Although initial stages of BPH are treated medically, many men eventually require surgical treatment due to persistent symptoms or complications from BPH. Aquablation therapy is a modern, minimally invasive, and effective technique for managing this condition.
