Aquablation Therapy
Aquablation therapy is a modern, safe, advanced, minimally invasive, and effective treatment for patients suffering from lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Utilizing the power of water with robotic precision and under ultrasound guidance, it causes the removal of the hyperplastic prostate tissue. Aquablation therapy, using a water jet without heat, offers a minimally invasive but effective solution for long-term relief.
The system includes:
- A robotic handpiece
- A control console
- A customized planning unit
The procedure is performed transurethrally, with the patient under general or spinal anesthesia, while a transrectal ultrasound is used throughout for real-time monitoring of the automated robotic treatment and allows adjustments based on the surgeon’s preference. The robotic handpiece, which includes an integrated cystoscope and a specialized waterjet head, is inserted through the urethra into the bladder. Then, specialized software is used to design and create a personalized treatment plan.
A specially designed nozzle sprays saline solution into the prostate at varying flow rates to achieve targeted but controlled removal of the hyperplastic tissue according to the predefined treatment plan. This is followed by cauterization to achieve hemostasis, using a monopolar or bipolar energy loop around the bladder neck. After completing the procedure, a catheter is placed and removed before the patient is discharged. Most patients are discharged the same day or the next day and quickly return to their daily activities.
INNOVATIONS
The removal of the hyperplastic prostate tissue is performed without the use of thermal energy but with the help of high-pressure waterjet, unlike other transurethral techniques. This reduces the risk of complications from thermal injury or current leakage to the urethra and prostate fossa. Aquablation technology can be effectively used for prostates of any size and shape.
Advantages of the method include high rates of preservation of ejaculation, continence, and erectile function, a low risk of complications such as urinary incontinence, and rapid recovery. According to published clinical studies, over 99% of men treated with Aquablation maintained continence after surgery, 100% preserved erectile function, 89% maintained ejaculation, and 94% did not require further surgical treatment over five years.
Small clinical studies also show Aquablation is suitable for treating men with prostate cancer who suffer from LUTS due to BPH, as well as men who have undergone previous treatments for BPH (re-treatment). Finally, Aquablation therapy appears safe, showing comparable and low rates of postoperative bleeding and other complications in men with BPH who are on anticoagulant therapy.
Aquablation therapy offers long-term effectiveness and is the only treatment that truly removes the prostate adenoma while preserving all functions (erectile function, ejaculation, and continence).
